Questions & Answers about Lütfen on saniye bekle!
Why is it on saniye instead of the plural on saniyeler?
In Turkish, whenever you put a number before a noun to show a quantity, the noun must stay in its singular form. You never add the plural ending! So it is always on saniye (ten second), iki saat (two hour), and so on.
How does saniye fit with the other time words we are learning?
In this lesson you are learning saat (hour or clock) and buçuk (half). The smaller units of time are dakika (minute) and saniye (second). You can use any of them with numbers to talk about a length of time.
Why doesn't the verb bekle have any person or time endings attached to it?
Bekle is a direct command meaning "Wait!". When you tell one person informally to do something in Turkish, you just take the dictionary form of the verb, which here is beklemek (to wait), and drop the -mek or -mak part. What is left is the command!
Does lütfen always have to be at the beginning of the sentence?
No, it is quite flexible! You could also say On saniye bekle lütfen! Putting lütfen at the beginning or the very end of the sentence is the most natural way to say "please" in Turkish.
