Questions & Answers about Oyuncak nerede?
Why does the word for 'where' end in -de?
The base word nere means "what place". By adding the locative suffix -de (which means "in", "on", or "at"), we get nerede ("at what place" or "where"). This is important for this lesson because the answers you give will also use this suffix, like masanın altında (under the table).
Where is the word for 'is' in this sentence?
In Turkish, the "to be" verb (am/is/are) is often attached to the end of a word as a suffix, but it is usually left out entirely for the third person (he/she/it). You simply say "Toy where?" (Oyuncak nerede?) and the "is" is naturally understood by context.
Why does it mean 'the toy' if there's no word for 'the'?
Turkish doesn't have a direct equivalent for the definite article "the". When a noun is the main subject of a sentence like this, we assume it is specific ("the toy"). If you wanted to ask about just any toy, you would use the word bir (a/an/one) and ask Bir oyuncak nerede?.
I've heard people pronounce it as nerde instead of nerede. Are they both right?
Yes! Nerede is the correct written form, but in everyday spoken Turkish, it is very common to drop the middle vowel so it sounds like nerde.
