Questions & Answers about Gözlüğü nerede?
Why is the word gözlüğü instead of gözlük?
The base word is gözlük (glasses). To say "his glasses" or "her glasses", we add the 3rd person possessive suffix -ü. When we add a suffix starting with a vowel to a word ending in k, the k softens to a ğ. This is a very common consonant mutation rule in Turkish!
The current lesson is about the possessive buffer "s". Why isn't there an "s" in gözlüğü?
The buffer s is only used when the base noun ends in a vowel (like in arabası for "his car"). Because gözlük ends in a consonant, no buffer letter is needed to prevent two vowels from touching. We just attach the -ü directly.
In English, "glasses" is plural. Why doesn't gözlüğü have the plural suffix -ler?
In Turkish, gözlük is a singular noun, meaning a single pair of glasses. English treats the word as plural, but Turkish doesn't! If you used the plural form and said gözlükleri, it would mean multiple pairs of glasses.
How do we know it means "his glasses" and not "her glasses"?
Without extra context, we don't! The 3rd person possessive suffix is entirely gender-neutral, so gözlüğü can mean his glasses, her glasses, or its glasses. If you needed to clarify, you could add the pronoun and say onun gözlüğü.
