Questions & Answers about Bavulum çok büyük.
How does the ending on bavulum make it mean "my suitcase"?
The base word is bavul (suitcase). To say "my", we add the 1st person singular possessive ending -(I)m. Because the last vowel in bavul is 'u', 4-way vowel harmony dictates that the vowel in our ending is also 'u'. Therefore, we add -um to get bavulum.
Why isn't the word benim (my) used before the suitcase?
You can say benim bavulum, but the word benim is usually left out. The -um ending on bavulum already tells us exactly who owns the suitcase. You only need to include benim if you want to add extra emphasis, such as saying "My suitcase is very big (not yours)."
Where is the word for "is" in this sentence?
In Turkish, there is no separate word for "is" in this type of sentence. When describing a "he", "she", or "it" (like your suitcase), the "is" is simply understood from the context. Therefore, çok büyük naturally translates to "is very big".
