Why does the word kağıt change to kağıda?
The root word for paper is kağıt. When we add the vowel suffix -a, the hard consonant t changes to a softer d. This is called consonant mutation, and it happens to make the word flow better when speaking!
Why do we use the -a suffix to say 'on the paper'?
The -a suffix is the dative case, which usually translates to 'to' or 'towards'. While in English we write 'on' a piece of paper, Turkish logic treats writing as an action directed 'to' the paper. So, you are literally saying 'Do not write to the paper!'
How do we make the command negative in yazma?
The dictionary form of the verb is yazmak (to write). If you drop the -mak, you get the positive command yaz (write!). To tell someone not to do it, you add the negative suffix -ma or -me. Following vowel harmony rules, yaz takes -ma, creating yazma (do not write!).
