Questions & Answers about Bilgisayar nerede?
Why is nerede at the end of the sentence instead of the beginning?
In Turkish, question words usually go in the exact same spot where the answer will be. If the answer is Bilgisayar masada (The computer is on the table), the question simply replaces masada with nerede, giving us Bilgisayar nerede?.
Why isn't there a word for 'is' in this sentence?
In Turkish, there is no separate word for 'to be' (am/is/are). For the 'it' form (like 'the computer'), there is often no ending added to the sentence at all. The 'is' is simply understood because you are linking the object with a location.
Does the -de at the end of nerede mean something specific?
Yes! You might recognize the -de ending from earlier lessons as the location suffix meaning 'in', 'on', or 'at'. The word nerede is built using this ending, so it literally means 'at where' or 'in what place'.
Will Turkish speakers pronounce every letter in nerede when speaking?
Not usually. In casual, spoken Turkish, the middle 'e' is almost always dropped. You will very often hear people say nerde instead of the full nerede.
