Asking where (nerede)

Asking "Where?"

To ask where something or someone is, use the question word nerede. It usually comes right after the subject.

Where is the key?
Anahtar nerede?
Where is the restroom?
Tuvalet nerede?

Here, There, and Over There

To point out a general location, use burada (here), şurada (there), or orada (over there). Notice these are just the demonstrative pronouns bu, şu, and o combined with the locative suffix.

The key is here.
Anahtar burada.
The restroom is there.
Tuvalet şurada.

Answering with the Locative Case

To give a specific location, use the locative suffix (-da / -de / -ta / -te). You can combine this with burada, şurada, or orada to be extra clear.

Where is the phone?
Telefon nerede?
The phone is here, on the table.
Telefon burada, masada.
Where are the children?
Çocuklar nerede?
The children are in the garden.
Çocuklar bahçede.

Adding Personal Suffixes to Questions

Just as you attach personal endings to locations (like adding -yim to evde to say "I am at home"), you can attach them directly to nerede to ask where someone is.

For example, nerede + -sin (you) becomes neredesin? (Where are you?).

Where are you?
Sen neredesin?
I am at home.
Ben evdeyim.
We are at school.
Biz okuldayız.
