Questions & Answers about O öğretmen.
Why isn't there a word for "is" in this sentence?
In Turkish, you don't need a word or a suffix for "is" when talking about he, she, or it in the present tense. Just putting the pronoun and the noun together, like O öğretmen, naturally means "She is a teacher." This is known as the zero-copula.
Does O mean "she" or "he"? How can I tell?
Turkish does not have gendered pronouns, so O can mean "he", "she", or "it". It can also mean "that"! You just have to figure out which one it is based on the context of your conversation.
Why doesn't the sentence say O bir öğretmen to mean "She is a teacher"?
When stating someone's profession in Turkish, you usually leave out the indefinite article bir (a/an). O öğretmen is the most natural way to say it. Adding bir would sound like you are emphasizing that she is exactly one teacher, rather than simply talking about her job.
If O also means "that", could this sentence mean "That teacher"?
Yes, it absolutely could! Without any other context, O öğretmen might mean "She is a teacher" or "That teacher". In real life, the rest of the conversation or a slight pause after the word O makes it clear which meaning is intended.
