Verbs governing the locative ('-DA')

Verbs Governing the Locative Case

In Turkish, certain verbs require their complements—the ideas, fields, or objects they relate to—to take the locative case suffix (-da, -de, -ta, or -te). While English might use prepositions like "in" or "on," or even use a direct object with no preposition at all, Turkish uses the locative case to anchor the action to its target.

For instance, when talking about getting stuck on a detail, mastering a skill, or persevering in a task, verbs like takılı kalmak (to get stuck on), ustalaşmak (to master), and sebat etmek (to persevere) govern the locative case.

The meticulous engineer always gets stuck on small details.
Titiz mühendis her zaman küçük detaylarda takılı kalıyor.
He mastered this art because he is very meticulous.
Bu sanatta ustalaştı çünkü çok titiz.
Both the doctor and the nurse persevered in their decisions.
Hem doktor hem de hemşire kararlarında sebat etti.

Reaching a Consensus

Verbs related to agreeing or making a final decision also use the locative case to mark the topic or choice being settled upon.

Key verbs in this category include:

  • karar kılmak: to settle on
  • mutabık kalmak: to agree on
After thinking a lot, the boss settled on the yellow file.
Patron çok düşündükten sonra sarı dosyada karar kıldı.
Did you agree with the clients on the new conditions?
Müşterilerle yeni şartlarda mutabık kaldınız mı?

Mastering Actions and Competence

If the skill you are focusing on is an action rather than a noun, attach the locative suffix directly to the infinitive form of the verb (e.g., yapmakta - in doing).

To master cooking, one needs to specialize in meat dishes.
Yemek yapmakta ustalaşmak için et yemeklerinde uzmanlaşmak gerek.

Other verbs of agreement and competence, such as birleşmek (to unite / agree on) and yetkinleşmek (to become competent), follow the exact same locative pattern.

The two parties' uniting on this matter is very important.
İki tarafın bu hususta birleşmesi çok önemli.
He isn't practicing, so he isn't becoming competent in this profession.
Pratik yapmıyor, bu yüzden bu meslekte yetkinleşmiyor.
