When settling in for a multi-day journey on a sleeper train, you will often want to describe how long an activity lasts or how far the scenery stretches. To express "throughout" a period of time or "all along" a physical space, Turkish uses the postposition boyunca.
| throughout, all along | boyunca |
Grammatically, boyunca is very straightforward. It simply follows a bare noun. You do not need to add any spatial case endings (like the locative or dative) to the word that comes before it.
Temporal Duration: Throughout
To say that an action happens for the entire duration of a period, place boyunca immediately after a time word (like night, day, or season).
| I lay in the compartment throughout the entire night. | Bütün gece boyunca kompartımanda uzandım. |
Spatial Extent: All Along
When talking about physical space—like following the path of the train tracks or walking down the train cars—boyunca translates to "along" or "all along". It describes an action or feature extending alongside a geographic or physical line.
| When the train departed, we watched the scenery along the valley. | Tren kalkınca vadi boyunca manzarayı izledik. |
| The rails continue along the coast. | Raylar sahil boyunca devam ediyor. |
| I walked along the corridor and stopped next to my compartment. | Koridor boyunca yürüdüm ve kompartımanımın yanında durdum. |
Using with Possessives
If the noun you are extending across has a possessive ending (such as "our journey"), the rule remains the exact same: boyunca follows the noun directly without any additional case markers.
| I will read a book throughout our peaceful journey. | Huzurlu yolculuğumuz boyunca kitap okuyacağım. |
