The conjunction that (ki)

In Turkish, the conjunction ki connects two clauses. Unlike many native Turkish structures that nest sentences using suffixes, ki works similarly to the English word "that", sitting between two separate, complete clauses.

that (conjunction) / so... that
ki

Expressing Realization or Discovery

When paired with verbs of perception or thought—like seeing, noticing, or understanding—ki introduces the fact that was discovered. You will often see it after verbs like fark ettim (I noticed), gördük (we saw), or anladım (I understood).

I noticed that the door was locked.
Fark ettim ki kapı kilitliydi.
We went down to the basement and saw that the door was locked.
Bodruma indik ve gördük ki kapı kilitli.
I understood that ghosts apparently do not have blood.
Anladım ki hayaletlerin kanı yokmuş.

Sometimes, ki follows a standard action verb (like looking) to express a sudden, unexpected realization. In these cases, it acts like "and then I realized that...".

I looked behind me and realized that there was a strange shadow.
Arkama baktım ki garip bir gölge var.

Expressing Consequence (So... that)

Another common use of ki is to express that a situation was so extreme it caused a specific result. To do this, pair ki with the word öyle (so / such).

When describing an adjective, use the pattern öyle [adjective] ki... (so [adjective] that...).

The shadow was so strange that I got scared.
Gölge öyle garipti ki korktum.

When describing a noun, use the pattern öyle bir [noun] ki... (such a [noun] that...).

I heard such a scream that I remembered everything.
Öyle bir çığlık duydum ki her şeyi hatırladım.
It was such a mysterious forest that everything was hidden.
Öyle gizemli bir ormandı ki her şey gizliydi.
