Softening questions (acaba)

When you want to soften a question, express polite curiosity, or simply muse aloud to yourself, Turkish uses the word acaba. It translates perfectly to "I wonder" in English.

Placing "acaba" in a sentence

Unlike English, where "I wonder" often requires you to restructure the sentence (e.g., "Where is he?" becomes "I wonder where he is"), in Turkish, you simply add acaba to a fully formed question.

It is highly flexible, but it is most commonly placed at the very end of the question.

I wonder how old our family tree is?
Bizim soy ağacımız ne kadar eski acaba?
I wonder if our roots are in this old village?
Köklerimiz bu eski köyde mi acaba?

You can also place acaba at the very beginning of the sentence to set a curious, wondering tone right away.

I wonder what our ancestors' country of origin is?
Acaba atalarımızın kökeni hangi ülke?
I wonder if we come from a wealthy lineage?
Acaba zengin bir soydan mı geliyoruz?

Works with any question type

Notice in the examples above that acaba pairs effortlessly with both question words (like ne kadar or hangi) and yes/no question particles (, mi, mu, ). It does not change its form or alter the grammar of the rest of the sentence.

I wonder what we will learn about our genetic origin?
Acaba genetik kökenimiz hakkında ne öğreneceğiz?
I wonder if the heritage of this lineage will affect us?
Bu soyun mirası bizi etkileyecek mi acaba?
