Representation and formal purpose (adına)

Speaking "On Behalf Of"

When participating in formal settings or speaking for a community, you will often need to act "on behalf of" a group or cause. In Turkish, this is expressed using the postposition adına.

To say "on behalf of" or "in the name of," simply place a noun directly before adına.

on behalf of / in the name of
adına
I want to take the floor not as an individual, but on behalf of the association.
Bir şahıs olarak değil, dernek adına söz almak istiyorum.
We are voicing these problems on behalf of civil society.
Sivil toplum adına bu sorunları dile getiriyoruz.
I am speaking here on behalf of these individuals.
Burada bu şahıslar adına konuşuyorum.
The president is working not for the sake of his own interest, but on behalf of society.
Başkan, kendi menfaati adına değil, toplum adına çalışıyor.

Acting "In Order To"

Adına can also express a formal purpose or intention, translating to "in order to" or "for the sake of." Pair it with the infinitive form of a verb (ending in -mak or -mek).

This structure sounds more official and deliberate than simply using için (for), making it perfect for civic duties and formal proposals.

I attended the meeting in order to represent you.
Sizi temsil etmek adına toplantıya katıldım.
We prepared a new motion in order to protect our interests.
Menfaatlerimizi korumak adına yeni bir önerge hazırladık.
They authorized the police in order to protect the civilian population.
Sivil halkı korumak adına polisi yetkilendirdiler.
