Purpose compounds (-ma / -me)

To name tools or areas by their intended purpose (like a "cutting board" or "drying room"), Turkish uses a noun compound featuring a short verbal noun.

The Short Verbal Noun

To turn an action into a noun representing the concept of that action, attach -mA (-ma / -me) directly to the verb stem.

  • çalışmak (to work) → çalışma (working)
  • ölçmek (to measure) → ölçme (measuring)
  • boyamak (to paint) → boyama (painting)

Building the Purpose Compound

Combine this verbal noun with the object or place, exactly like a standard indefinite noun compound. The first word (the verbal noun) takes no extra suffixes. The second word takes the 3rd person possessive suffix (-I / -sI).

  • çalışma
    • masa
      • çalışma masası (work desk)
  • ölçme
    • alet
      • iölçme aleti (measuring tool)
A set square is a good measuring tool, just like a ruler.
Gönye de cetvel gibi iyi bir ölçme aletidir.
A set square is not a shaping tool for the clay.
Gönye, kil için bir şekillendirme aleti değildir.

Adding Cases to the Compound

Because these compounds end in a possessive suffix, you must insert the buffer letter -n- before adding spatial case markers (like the locative "in/on" or dative "to").

  • çalışma masası (work desk) → çalışma masasında (on the work desk)
  • boyama alanı (painting area) → boyama alanına (to the painting area)
Leave the clay and the model on the work desk.
Kili ve maketi çalışma masasında bırak.
You will cut the model on the cutting board anyway.
Nasıl olsa maketi kesme tahtasında keseceksin.
Bring the varnish and the model to the painting area.
Cilayı ve maketi boyama alanına getir.

You can apply this exact logic to containers and dedicated rooms to keep your workshop perfectly organized.

Mix the primer in the mixing bowl with the spatula.
Astarı karıştırma kasesinde spatula ile karıştır.
I know that you applied the primer and the varnish in the drying room.
Astarı ve cilayı kurutma odasında sürdüğünü biliyorum.
