In Turkish, word order is famously flexible thanks to case markers doing the heavy lifting of showing who does what to whom. But this flexibility has a strict master: the pre-verbal focus (vurgu).
Whatever information sits immediately before the verb is the most important part of the sentence. It is the spotlight.
The Spotlight and Contrasting Facts
If you want to emphasize exactly what happened or correct a misunderstanding, you place the true, emphasized fact right before the verb.
| I didn't press the screen, I pressed the button! | Ekrana basmadım, butona bastım! |
When correcting someone with an explicit "not X, but Y" statement, you use değil (not) after the false claim, and place the true claim in the pre-verbal focus position.
| I answered this question, not the other contestant. | Bu soruyu diğer yarışmacı değil, ben yanıtladım. |
Pinpointing Questions
When you want to ask "Is it YOU who...?" or "Are they the ones who...?", the question particle (mı/mi/mu/mü) pairs with the focused word. Naturally, this entire block slides right into the pre-verbal spotlight.
| Are you the one using the lifeline? | Jokeri sen mi kullanıyorsun? |
| Are you the one who looked at the new ranking? | Yeni sıralamaya sen mi baktın? |
Shifting Nouns in Focus
The standard Turkish sentence order is Subject-Object-Verb. This naturally places the direct object in the focus slot, emphasizing what received the action.
| I chose the general category. | Ben genel kategoriyi seçtim. |
However, if you want to emphasize who performed the action, you can break the standard order and slide the subject right in front of the verb.
| It is the contestants who do not like the general category. | Genel kategoriyi yarışmacılar sevmiyor. |
Focusing on Details and Time
The pre-verbal slot isn't reserved just for nouns. If the most critical piece of information is how an action was completed, or when it will happen, you place your adverb or time word directly in front of the verb.
| I answered the question by guessing. | Soruyu tahmin ederek yanıtladım. |
| The jury will determine the ranking tomorrow. | Jüri sıralamayı yarın belirleyecek. |
