Past personal necessity (-mAm lazımdı)

Past Personal Necessity: "I Had To"

When you want to state that a specific person had an obligation in the past—such as "I had to go" or "We needed to help"—you combine a short verbal noun with a possessive suffix and the word lazımdı (or gerekiyordu).

To build this structure:

  • Take the verb stem.
  • Add the short verbal noun suffix -ma or -me (following 2-way vowel harmony).
  • Add a possessive suffix to indicate whose obligation it was (e.g., -m for "my", -miz for "our").
  • Add lazımdı (it was necessary).

For example, to say "I had to drop by", you use the verb uğramak: uğrama + m = uğramam lazımdı (literally: "my dropping by was necessary").

I had to drop by my grandfather's house.
Dedemin evine uğramam lazımdı.

If the obligation belonged to "us", you use the "our" possessive suffix (-mız or -miz).

When my grandfather got sick, we had to go to the hospital.
Dedem hastalanınca hastaneye gitmemiz lazımdı.

Third-Person Necessity: "He/She Had To"

When describing someone else's obligation ("he/she had to"), attach the third-person possessive suffix -sı or -si to the verbal noun.

If you name the person who had the obligation, that noun takes the genitive case ending (-ın / -in / -nın / -nin), just like in a standard "owner-owned" relationship. For example, halamın girmesi (my aunt's entering) or dedenin ilgilenmesi (the grandfather's taking care).

My aunt had to go into surgery.
Halamın ameliyata girmesi lazımdı.
The grandfather had to take care of his grandchild.
Dedenin torunuyla ilgilenmesi lazımdı.

This grammar pattern is extremely common when explaining past emergencies, giving excuses, or describing a sudden rush to help family members.

My cousin got sick, I had to get there quickly.
Kuzenim hastalandı, çabuk yetişmem lazımdı.
He had to make it to the train station in a rush.
Telaşla tren istasyonuna yetişmesi lazımdı.

Family Duties and Plural Subjects

When explaining family obligations—like helping an uncle (dayı), aunt-in-law (yenge), or nephew/niece (yeğen)—you can string necessities together to explain exactly why you or your relatives were in a hurry.

Yesterday evening I had to help my uncle.
Dün akşam dayıma yardım etmem lazımdı.

If the obligation belongs to a plural subject ("they had to"), use the plural possessive suffix -ları or -leri on the verbal noun. For the verb gitmek, "they had to go" becomes gitmeleri lazımdı.

My aunt-in-law and my uncle hurried because they had to go to the hospital.
Yengem ve dayım acele etti çünkü hastaneye gitmeleri lazımdı.
