To talk about ancient history, like what happened to the dinosaurs long before the ice age, you need the past perfect tense. In English, we use this tense to describe an action that had already happened before another event in the past (the "had done" tense).
The Past Perfect Tense (-mıştı)
In Turkish, the past perfect (or pluperfect) is formed by combining the perfect suffix -mış / -miş / -muş / -müş with the past copula.
Because the suffix -mIş ends in an unvoiced consonant (ş), the past copula's initial d always mutates to t. This gives us four possible combinations depending on 4-way vowel harmony:
- -mıştı
- -mişti
- -muştu
- -müştü
For example, yaşamak (to live) becomes yaşamıştı (had lived), and çarpmak (to hit) becomes çarpmıştı (had hit).

Timelines and Sequences
The past perfect is most useful when establishing a sequence of events. You will frequently see it used alongside specific time markers like daha önce (before/earlier), or paired with the simple past tense to clarify exactly which event happened first.

To talk about what you or we had done, simply attach the standard past tense personal endings to the -mıştı block.
