Past logical deduction (-miş olsa gerek)

Past Deductions with "-mış olsa gerek"

When exploring an ancient ruin or archaeological dig, you often need to make strong logical deductions about what happened in the distant past. To express that an action "must have" happened, use the structure -mış olsa gerek.

To form this, attach the reported past tense suffix (-mış / -miş / -muş / -müş) to the verb stem, followed by the phrase olsa gerek.

This ancient civilization must have built large columns.
Bu antik medeniyet büyük sütunlar inşa etmiş olsa gerek.
The merchants must have used these gold coins.
Tüccarlar bu altın sikkeleri kullanmış olsa gerek.

This structure is perfect for piecing together history from the clues left behind.

A wild tribe must have invaded the city.
Vahşi bir kabile şehri istila etmiş olsa gerek.
The warriors must have died during the long siege.
Savaşçılar uzun kuşatma boyunca ölmüş olsa gerek.
The king must have hidden the treasure in the cave.
Kral hazineyi mağaraya saklamış olsa gerek.

Evidence vs. Strong Deduction

The reported past suffix -mış can be used on its own to state something gathered from physical evidence ("apparently"). Adding olsa gerek changes the statement from an observation into a strong logical deduction ("must have").

The merchants apparently bought the bowls with coins.
Tüccarlar çanakları sikkelerle almış.
The merchants must have hidden the coins inside the bowls.
Tüccarlar sikkeleri çanakların içine saklamış olsa gerek.
