Minimum acceptable alternatives (bari, en azından)

When bad weather ruins a picnic or the power goes out, you have to adapt. To suggest a minimum acceptable alternative or look on the bright side of a cancelled plan, Turkish uses three common expressions: bari, en azından, and hiç olmazsa.

Settling for a Compromise: Bari

Bari translates closely to "might as well" or "at least." It carries a slight tone of resignation—you are disappointed the original plan failed, but you want to offer a compromise to make the best of it.

If you cannot go out, you might just have to "make do" (idare etmek).

We won't be able to go out, we might as well make do at home.
Dışarı çıkamayacağız, bari evde idare edelim.
We won't be able to have a barbecue, we might as well bake pizza in the oven.
Mangal yapamayacağız, bari fırında pizza pişirelim.

Finding the Bare Minimum: En azından

En azından literally means "at its least." It is widely used to salvage a situation, focusing on the minimum positive action you can take when things go wrong.

They cancelled the picnic, at least let's order pizza to the house.
Pikniği iptal ettiler, en azından eve pizza sipariş verelim.
The children cannot go out, at least let's pop corn and cheer them up.
Çocuklar dışarı çıkamaz, en azından mısır patlatalım ve onları neşelendirelim.

If Nothing Else: Hiç olmazsa

Hiç olmazsa literally translates to "if it doesn't happen at all." You use it to set a bare-minimum expectation when the primary goal is completely off the table, much like saying "if nothing else" in English.

After returning home, if nothing else let's bake cookies.
Eve döndükten sonra hiç olmazsa kurabiye pişirelim.
The electricity went out, if nothing else let's play cards.
Elektrikler kesildi, hiç olmazsa iskambil oynayalım.

Reluctant Acceptance

When you accept these indoor compromises, you might do so gönülsüzce (reluctantly). Regardless of which marker you use, they all naturally pair with suggestions or commands (like let's play backgammon or cards) to help salvage the day.

We returned home reluctantly, we might as well play backgammon.
Gönülsüzce eve döndük, bari tavla oynayalım.
