Manner and choice questions (nasıl, hangi)

Asking "Which" with Hangi

Use the question word hangi (which) to ask for a specific preference. Just like in English, it goes directly before the noun.

Which model phone do you want?
Hangi model telefon istiyorsun?
Which size sweater are you looking for?
Hangi beden kazak arıyorsunuz?

You can discuss these choices using verbs like denemek (to try on) and pointing words like bu (this) and şu (that).

This size is small, I want to try on that model.
Bu beden küçük, şu modeli denemek istiyorum.

Asking "How" with Nasıl

Use the question word nasıl (how) to ask for an opinion about an item, like its fabric (kumaş) or quality.

How is this fabric, is it good?
Bu kumaş nasıl, iyi mi?
How is the yellow shirt, is it high-quality?
Sarı gömlek nasıl, kaliteli mi?

Adding Suffixes

When asking about something related to a specific choice, like a discount on a shoe, the locative suffix (-da/-de) attaches to the noun, not the question word.

Which shoe has a discount?
Hangi ayakkabıda indirim var?
There is no discount on that new model.
Şu yeni modelde indirim yok.

Nasıl with Actions

You also use nasıl to ask how an action is performed. A common example while shopping is choosing how you will pay: with cash (nakit) or a card (kart).

How are you paying, cash or card?
Nasıl ödüyorsunuz, nakit mi kart mı?
I want to pay cash.
Nakit ödemek istiyorum.
I don't have cash, I have a card.
Bende nakit yok, kart var.
