Frozen states (-akalmak / -ekalmak)

To describe moments of being frozen in a state—whether from awe, shock, or surprise—Turkish uses a special compound verb suffix.

The Frozen State Suffix: -(y)akalmak / -(y)ekalmak

When someone gets "stuck" doing an action out of shock or helplessness, Turkish attaches a form of kalmak (to stay/remain) directly to the main verb.

To build this compound verb, take the verb root, add -a or -e (following two-way vowel harmony), and attach kalmak. If the verb root ends in a vowel, use the buffer letter y.

For example, to say you "stare in awe," combine bakmak (to look) + -a + kalmak to get bakakalmak.

The acrobats are jumping from a high rope.
Akrobatlar yüksek bir ipten atlıyor.
We stare at the acrobats in awe.
Biz akrobatlara bakakalıyoruz.

Common Reactions: Freezing and Astoundment

This structure is highly productive for describing sudden reactions to danger or incredible feats:

  • donmak (to freeze) + -a
    • kalmak = donakalmak (to freeze in shock)
  • şaşmak (to be surprised) + -a
    • kalmak = şaşakalmak (to be astounded)
The tightrope walker suddenly falls, and everyone freezes in shock.
Cambaz aniden düşüyor ve herkes donakalıyor.
The tightrope walker holds onto the rope again, the audience is astounded.
Cambaz tekrar ipe tutunuyor, seyirciler şaşakalıyor.

The Ultimate Freeze: Kalakalmak

Sometimes, you aren't stuck doing a specific action—you are just left completely motionless or speechless. By attaching this suffix to kalmak itself, you get kalakalmak.

The show ends and we are left frozen in silence.
Gösteri bitiyor ve biz sessizce kalakalıyoruz.
The music stops suddenly, I am left motionless on the stage.
Müzik aniden duruyor, sahnede kalakalıyorum.

Being in Awe

You can also express amazement using the word hayran (in awe / amazed). It is typically paired with auxiliary verbs like kalmak (to remain amazed) or olmak (to become amazed) and takes the dative case (-a / -e) for the object you are admiring.

I am amazed by the talented tightrope walker.
Ben yetenekli cambaza hayran kalıyorum.
