Complete opposition (aksine, tersine)

To highlight a total shift from what was just stated or expected, Turkish uses conjunctions of complete opposition.

Aksine and Tersine

To express "on the contrary" or "in contrast," use aksine or tersine. They are interchangeable and usually sit at the beginning of the second clause.

For added emphasis, add tam (exactly) to say tam tersine (quite the contrary).

In previous years, flashy dresses were apparently in fashion.
Önceki yıllarda gösterişli elbiseler modaymış.
On the contrary, nowadays the thing that is truly important is simplicity.
Aksine, günümüzde asıl önemli olan şey sadelik.

These conjunctions frequently join two independent clauses separated by a semicolon:

Tight pants are out of fashion now; on the contrary, we wear baggy clothes.
Dar pantolonlar artık demode; tersine, salaş kıyafetler giyiyoruz.
Young people do not take pains with their clothes; quite the contrary, they look unkempt.
Gençler kıyafetlerine özenmiyor; tam tersine, özensiz görünüyorlar.
Nowadays, no one takes pains to dress stylishly; on the contrary, everyone chooses to be comfortable.
Günümüzde kimse şık giyinmeye özenmiyor; aksine, herkes rahat olmayı seçiyor.

You can also use them to correct an assumption and clarify your true feelings:

It is not that I don't find these baggy clothes strange; on the contrary, sometimes I find them very ugly.
Bu salaş kıyafetleri yadırgamıyor değilim; aksine, bazen çok çirkin buluyorum.
On the contrary, as long as we feel comfortable, we like wearing baggy clothes.
Aksine, rahat hissettiğimiz sürece salaş kıyafetler giymeyi seviyoruz.
