Comparisons of Equality (kadar)
In Turkish, the postposition kadar is used to show that two things are equal in a specific trait. It translates to "as much as" or "as [adjective] as".
To form this comparison, place kadar after the noun you are comparing against, followed by the adjective: [Noun 1] + [Noun 2] + kadar + [Adjective].
| This sweater is as thick as that jacket. | Bu kazak şu ceket kadar kalın. |
| This fabric is as thin as paper. | Bu kumaş kâğıt kadar ince. |
To make a negative comparison ("not as... as"), simply add the negative word değil at the end of the sentence.
| This book is not as thick as that dictionary. | Bu kitap şu sözlük kadar kalın değil. |
Physical Dimensions
You can use kadar to compare physical attributes like height and depth. Just like with basic sentences, yes/no questions are formed by adding the question particle mi after the adjective.
| This building is as high as that hotel. | Bu bina şu otel kadar yüksek. |
| Is the box as deep as the cabinet? | Kutu dolap kadar derin mi? |
Measurements and Scales
You can also combine exact measurements or concepts like hız (speed) with kadar to make highly specific comparisons.
| The box is as heavy as two liters of water. | Kutu iki litre su kadar ağır. |
| The train's speed is not as high as the airplane's speed. | Trenin hızı uçağın hızı kadar yüksek değil. |
