Adjectives Modifying Nouns
In Turkish, adjectives always come immediately before the noun they describe, exactly as they do in English. Adjectives are invariable, meaning they do not change form or take suffixes to match the noun they modify.
Let's look at how to use adjectives, like colors, to describe everyday objects and clothing:
| This red sweater is very beautiful. | Bu kırmızı kazak çok güzel. |
| The man is wearing black trousers. | Adam siyah pantolon giyiyor. |
| The green dress is not new. | Yeşil elbise yeni değil. |
| The yellow cat is sleeping. | Sarı kedi uyuyor. |
Adjectives with "Bir"
When you use an adjective with the indefinite article bir (a/an), the word order changes compared to English. In Turkish, bir usually comes between the adjective and the noun.
For example, to say "a black shirt", you do not say "bir siyah gömlek". Instead, the correct order is siyah bir gömlek (literally: "black a shirt").
| I am looking for a black shirt. | Siyah bir gömlek arıyorum. |
| The child is buying a blue pen. | Çocuk mavi bir kalem alıyor. |
| The woman wants a white skirt. | Kadın beyaz bir etek istiyor. |
| I am buying a new t-shirt. | Yeni bir tişört alıyorum. |
| The student is eating a red apple. | Öğrenci kırmızı bir elma yiyor. |
