Questions & Answers about ฉัน ถูก กล่าวหา ว่า โกหก ค่ะ
Why do we use ถูก here to mean "was"?
In Thai, you don't use the verb "to be" to create a passive sentence. Instead, you put the passive marker ถูก right before the main verb (กล่าวหา). Keep in mind that ถูก is used for negative or unpleasant events, which makes it the perfect word to use when someone is being accused.
The English translation says "accused of lying". Does ว่า mean "of"?
Not quite! You might remember ว่า as the connecting word "that" used after verbs of speaking or thinking. Because กล่าวหา (to accuse) involves speaking, Thai uses ว่า to introduce what was said. The sentence is literally structured as "I was accused that [I] lie".
Why is there no pronoun before โกหก (to lie)? How do we know who is lying?
Thai often drops pronouns when the context makes it obvious. Since the speaker (ฉัน) is the one being accused, it is understood that they are the one who supposedly lied. You would only add a pronoun after ว่า if you were accused of someone else lying!
Does the word กล่าวหา (to accuse) break down into smaller words?
Yes! It is made of two common verbs: กล่าว means "to say" or "to speak", and หา means "to look for". Combined into กล่าวหา, they take on the meaning of "to accuse".
