Questions & Answers about เมื่อวาน ผม ไป โรงพยาบาล ครับ
Why is เมื่อวาน (yesterday) at the beginning of the sentence?
In Thai, time words like เมื่อวาน usually go at the very beginning or the very end of a sentence. Putting it at the beginning, like in this sentence, is a great way to set the time context right away. Saying ผมไปโรงพยาบาลเมื่อวานครับ (putting the time word at the end) is also perfectly correct!
There is no past tense word here. How do we know it means 'went' instead of 'go'?
Thai verbs never change their form. The verb ไป can mean go, goes, going, or went. Because the sentence includes the time word เมื่อวาน (yesterday), the past tense is already obvious from the context. You don't need to add any special grammar words to make the verb past tense!
Why isn't there a word for 'to' before the hospital?
In English we say 'went to the hospital', but in Thai, the verb ไป (to go) connects directly to the destination. You just say 'go hospital' (ไปโรงพยาบาล). Adding a word for 'to' here would actually sound unnatural.
