Why do we use เป็น here for "is"?
In Thai, เป็น (pen) is used to link a person to their profession, nationality, or identity. It tells us what someone is, so it is the exact word you need to say someone is a teacher.
There is no word for "a" before ครู. How do we say "a teacher"?
Thai doesn't use articles like "a", "an", or "the". You simply state the noun. Therefore, เป็น ครู naturally means "is a teacher" without needing any extra words.
Does แม่ mean "my mother" or just "mother" in general?
