Questions & Answers about ปลา อร่อย มาก ครับ
Why isn't there a word for 'is' in this sentence?
In Thai, words that describe things (like อร่อย for 'delicious') actually work as verbs all by themselves. These are called stative verbs. Because 'delicious' acts as the verb, you don't need a connecting word like 'is' or 'are'. You just say 'fish delicious'.
Why does มาก (very) come after อร่อย (delicious) instead of before it?
In English, we say 'very delicious', putting the degree word first. In Thai, adverbs that tell you how much usually come right after the word they describe. So the word order is literally 'fish delicious very'.
How do we know ปลา means 'the fish' and not 'a fish' or 'fishes'?
Thai doesn't use articles like 'a' or 'the', and nouns like ปลา don't change their form to show plural. You figure out the exact meaning from context. If you are sitting at a table eating a specific meal, it is naturally understood as 'the fish'.
