Asking "Where?" (ที่ไหน)
Just like other question words in Thai, ที่ไหน (where) is an in-situ word. You do not move it to the beginning of the sentence. To ask where someone does an action, place ที่ไหน directly after the verb: Subject + Verb + ที่ไหน.
| Where do you work? | คุณ ทำงาน ที่ไหน ครับ |
| Where does the student study? | นักเรียน เรียน ที่ไหน ครับ |
Answering with Locations
When answering, simply replace the question word ที่ไหน with the actual location. You will typically use location markers like ที่ (at) or ใน (in) right before the place noun.
| I work at a Japanese company. | ผม ทำงาน ที่ บริษัท ญี่ปุ่น ครับ |
| He works at a bank in Bangkok. | เขา ทำงาน ที่ ธนาคาร ใน กรุงเทพฯ ค่ะ |
Asking Where Something "Is" (อยู่)
To ask where a place, object, or person is currently located, use the verb อยู่ (to be at / to be located).
| Where is the hotel? | โรงแรม อยู่ ที่ไหน คะ |
| The hotel is in Bangkok. | โรงแรม อยู่ ใน กรุงเทพฯ ครับ |
You can also use it to describe a location relative to other places, such as ใกล้ (near).
| Where is the doctor's house? | บ้าน ของ หมอ อยู่ ที่ไหน ครับ |
| The house is near the bank. | บ้าน อยู่ ใกล้ ธนาคาร ค่ะ |
Asking Where Someone is Staying (พัก)
When talking about where someone is staying temporarily (like at a hotel), use the verb พัก (to stay). It is frequently paired with อยู่ to form พักอยู่ (to be staying at).
| to stay / to rest / take a break | พัก |
| Where are you staying? | คุณ พัก อยู่ ที่ไหน ครับ |
| I am staying at a new hotel. | ฉัน พัก อยู่ ที่ โรงแรม ใหม่ ค่ะ |
