Connecting Traits to Outcomes
To express that an outcome happened because of someone's underlying nature, strong emotion, or personality, use the pattern ด้วยความที่... ก็เลย... (due to the fact that... so...).
Place ด้วยความที่ at the beginning of the cause clause, followed by the subject and their trait. Then, start the resulting clause with ก็เลย.
| Because she is ambitious, she works until midnight every day. | ด้วยความที่ เธอ ทะเยอทะยาน ก็เลย ทำงาน จนถึง เที่ยงคืน ทุกวัน ค่ะ |
Social Consequences
This structure is highly useful for explaining why people succeed or struggle socially. If someone is ปากร้าย (sharp-tongued), they might have a hard time when they try to เข้าสังคม (socialize).
| Because he is sharp-tongued, nobody wants to socialize with him. | ด้วยความที่ เขา ปากร้าย ก็เลย ไม่ มี ใคร อยาก เข้าสังคม ด้วย ค่ะ |
Generosity and Narrow-mindedness
Many Thai personality descriptors use the word ใจ (heart). Someone who is generous, forgiving, and open is ใจกว้าง (broad-hearted), while someone who is selfish or petty is ใจแคบ (narrow-hearted).
| Because grandma is generous, she forgave them. | ด้วยความที่ ย่า เป็น คน ใจกว้าง ก็เลย ให้อภัย พวก เขา ค่ะ |
| I don't really like narrow-minded people because they are selfish. | ผม ไม่ค่อย ชอบ คน ใจแคบ เพราะ เขา เห็นแก่ตัว ครับ |
Humility and Aggression
Traits like being อ่อนน้อม (humble) typically lead to positive reactions from others, whereas being ก้าวร้าว (aggressive) pushes people away.
| Because she is humble, she is popular. | ด้วยความที่ เธอ อ่อนน้อม ก็เลย ได้รับ ความนิยม ค่ะ |
| We should not be aggressive, but should be humble. | เรา ไม่ ควร ก้าวร้าว แต่ ควร อ่อนน้อม ครับ |
Habits and Mindsets
This pattern also applies to personal habits, like being ฟุ่มเฟือย (extravagant or wasteful), or having a specific perspective, such as choosing to look on the bright side (มองในแง่ดี).
| Because he is extravagant, he has a lot of debt. | ด้วยความที่ เขา ฟุ่มเฟือย ก็เลย มี หนี้ เยอะ ครับ |
| Because he looks on the bright side, he doesn't panic. | ด้วยความที่ เขา มอง ใน แง่ดี ก็เลย ไม่ ตกใจ ครับ |
