Planning a social gathering doesn't always go right the first time. Venues get booked, schedules clash, and you often need to pivot to alternative plans.
To talk about "other" options, Thai uses the modifier อื่น. Unlike English, where "other" comes before the noun, อื่น is placed after the noun.
When you want to emphasize plurality—referring to "others" or "various other" options—you double the word using the repetition symbol (ๆ) to make อื่นๆ.
Alternative Times and Sequences
Sometimes you don't just need a different place; you need a different time. To suggest doing something "another day" or "later," you can use the compound word วันหลัง.
If you are moving sequentially through a list of options or a travel itinerary, use ถัดไป to mean "next" or "following." Like our previous modifiers, it sits immediately after the noun.
Working with Classifiers
If a noun requires a classifier to express a specific unit or grouping, อื่น and อื่นๆ must follow the classifier, not the main noun. For example, to say "other groups of people," place อื่น directly after the classifier for groups (กลุ่ม).
