Supposing That: สมมติว่า
To set up a hypothetical scenario, such as a sudden financial windfall or a market crash, use สมมติว่า (supposing that / let's assume).
Place สมมติว่า at the very beginning of the premise clause, followed by the expected result or outcome in the next clause:

Hypothetical Market Conditions
When discussing finance and investments, you will often need to talk about variables like เงินเฟ้อ (inflation) and whether assets are ผันผวน (volatile). You can use สมมติว่า to propose different conditions and analyze how these factors might affect the market:
| Supposing that inflation goes up, the stock market will probably be very volatile. | สมมติว่า เงินเฟ้อ สูง ขึ้น ตลาด หุ้น ก็ น่าจะ ผันผวน มาก ครับ |

Taking Precautions: เผื่อว่า
While สมมติว่า introduces a purely hypothetical premise ("supposing that"), you will also encounter the related conjunction เผื่อว่า (in case). Use เผื่อว่า when an action is taken specifically in preparation for a possible, though uncertain, future event:

You can easily use สมมติว่า to pose questions to others, asking what they would do or how they would invest under certain assumptions:
