Quitting a Habit
To talk about breaking a habit, giving up a vice, or permanently stopping an activity, use the auxiliary verb เลิก (to stop or quit). Place เลิก directly before the action verb or activity noun you are giving up.
| He already quit drinking liquor. | เขา เลิก ดื่ม เหล้า แล้ว |
Notice how the completed marker แล้ว is added at the end to show that the quitting has already taken effect.
You can also use เลิก directly before a noun representing a vice, such as gambling.
| If you do not quit gambling, you will have a lot of debt. | ถ้า ไม่ เลิก การพนัน ก็ จะ มี หนี้ เยอะ |
Making a Vow to Quit
When making a strong resolution to change your lifestyle, you might swear (สาบาน) to stop a bad habit. To say that you will quit, place the future marker จะ before เลิก.
To emphasize the permanence of your decision, add a time modifier like ตลอดไป (forever) or an adverb like เด็ดขาด (absolutely) at the end of the sentence.
| I swear that I will quit smoking forever. | ผม สาบาน ว่า จะ เลิก สูบ บุหรี่ ตลอดไป |
| I swear I will quit lying absolutely. | ฉัน สาบาน ว่า จะ เลิก โกหก เด็ดขาด |
