The Spoken Predicate Correlative: ทั้ง... ทั้ง...
When describing the simultaneous burden of multiple grueling tasks, Thai uses the spoken correlative ทั้ง... ทั้ง... ("both... and..."). Place ทั้ง directly before each parallel verb or adjective you wish to pair.
| both... and... | ทั้ง... ทั้ง... |
This structure is especially useful when talking about professional burnout or having to แบกรับ (shoulder) too many responsibilities at once.
| I must both shoulder the team's problems and do my own work. | ผม ต้อง ทั้ง แบกรับ ปัญหา ของ ทีม ทั้ง ทำงาน ของ ตัวเอง ครับ |
Overwhelming Workloads
You can pair different verbs to express how severely a situation impacts you. You will often see this structure used with vocabulary related to intense pressure and burnout, such as ถาโถม (to overwhelm), บีบคั้น (to pressure), or feeling ท้อแท้ (to be disheartened).
| When the workload overwhelms me, I am both stressed and disheartened. | เมื่อ ภาระงาน ถาโถม ฉัน ทั้ง เครียด ทั้ง ท้อแท้ ค่ะ |
| This crisis both besets the company and pressures the employees. | วิกฤต นี้ ทั้ง รุมเร้า บริษัท ทั้ง บีบคั้น พนักงาน ครับ |
Physical Exhaustion
Severe burnout takes a physical toll. When someone is forced to ตรากตรำ (toil) without rest, their health becomes ทรุดโทรม (run-down).
| He must toil until his body is run-down. | เขา ต้อง ตรากตรำ จน ร่างกาย ทรุดโทรม ครับ |
You can use the correlative structure with parallel adjectives to describe extreme physical exhaustion, such as looking อิดโรย (weary) or ซูบผอม (gaunt).
| She is both exhausted and gaunt. | เธอ ทั้ง อิดโรย ทั้ง ซูบผอม ค่ะ |
| Patients are usually both run-down and weary. | คนไข้ มักจะ ทั้ง ทรุดโทรม ทั้ง อิดโรย ครับ |
