Small words of formal Thai (ณ, เพียง, ใด)

The Small Print

Announcements, tickets and invitations carry a set of small formal words:

formalspoken counterpartmeaning
ที่at (a place/time)
สู่ไป / ถึงto, towards
มิได้ไม่ได้did not / not at all
ใดไหน / อะไรwhich, any
เพียงแค่only, merely

Only and Exclusively

เพียง (merely) counts an amount as small; เฉพาะ (only, specifically) restricts who or what qualifies — ห้องนี้เฉพาะพนักงาน this room is staff-only. On signs, เฉพาะ is everywhere.

Counting Cases: ราย

ราย is the classifier of reports and records — patients, cases, news items: คนไข้ใหม่สองราย two new patients.

ประจำ and เดิม

ประจำ marks what is regular or attached to a place (หมอประจำโรงพยาบาล the hospital's resident doctor; เป็นประจำ regularly), and เดิม points back to what was there before — ที่เดิม the same old place, ราคาเดิม the original price.
