When giving directions, linking conditions to their outcomes is essential. You can connect a landmark or situation directly to the next step using the ถ้า... (If... then...) structure.
Giving Directions with ถ้า...
To tell someone what to do once they reach a certain point, start the condition with ถ้า (if) and place ก็ (then) directly before the verb in the result clause.
Structure: ถ้า + [Landmark/Action], (Subject) + ก็ + [Next Direction]
| If you reach the intersection, turn left. |
| If you see the sign, turn right into the alley. |
Future Results and Expectations
If the result is not a command but rather something the listener will or should find, place ก็ before auxiliary verbs like จะ (will) or น่าจะ (should / likely to).
| If you walk past the intersection, you will find a coffee shop at the street corner. |
| If you cross the bridge, you should be able to find the alley. |
Negative Conditions
To explain what to do if a condition is not met, or what happens if a mistake is made, place ไม่ (not) before the verb in the ถ้า clause.
| If you don't know the way, ask people around here.
| If you do not keep right, then you will get lost easily. |
Navigational Verbs
When driving or walking, you will frequently pair this structure with specific navigational verbs, such as ชิด (to keep to a side) or หยุด (to stop).
| If you want to turn left, then keep left. |
| If you see a red light, then stop. |
