Noun classifiers (ใบ, เล่ม)

Counting Knives and Bound Volumes with เล่ม

As a reminder, counting objects in Thai always follows the word order: Noun + Number + Classifier.

First, we will practice the classifier เล่ม. This classifier is uniquely used for hand-held tools with a blade, such as knives.

It is also the standard classifier for bound volumes with pages, including books, magazines, dictionaries, and passports.

You also need to use the classifier when pointing out specific items with "this" (นี้) and "that" (นั้น), following the pattern Noun + Classifier + นี้/นั้น.

Counting Containers and Flat Objects with ใบ

The classifier ใบ is used for two broad categories of objects. First, use it when counting dishware and containers, such as bowls, cups, and pots.

Second, use ใบ to count small, flat, leaf-like items such as cards and tickets.

Storing and Arranging

When talking about organizing your space, use the verb เก็บ for putting things away or storing them, and เรียง for arranging them neatly.
