Futile actions (เปล่าๆ)

Let's start with two important words you hope to avoid: กฎจราจร (traffic rules) and ใบสั่ง (traffic ticket).

Actions in Vain

To indicate that an effort yielded no useful result, place the modifier เปล่าๆ ("in vain" or "for nothing") at the end of a clause. For example, choosing to โต้เถียง (argue) with a strict เจ้าพนักงาน (officer) is rarely successful:

Notice how เปล่าๆ always waits until the very end of the clause, after the object and any other modifiers.

Exhausting Efforts

You can also place เปล่าๆ after stative verbs—like เหนื่อย (tired) or เสียเวลา (waste time)—to show that a condition was experienced for no good reason.
