Free-choice emphasis (ก็ตาม)

The "-ever" Suffix

To express open options like "whoever" or "whatever," Thai uses the modifier ก็ตาม immediately after a question word. You can place these free-choice phrases in either the subject or object position of a sentence.

ก็ตาม

Specifying Conditions with ที่

Often, you need to describe exactly what "whoever" or "whatever" is doing. To link these free-choice pronouns to a specific action, add the relative pronoun ที่ immediately after ก็ตาม. This creates phrases like "whoever that..." or "whatever that..."

Whenever, Wherever, and Whoever

This exact same pattern works seamlessly with other question words to express "whenever" (เมื่อไร ก็ตาม) or "wherever" (ที่ไหน ก็ตาม).

In the workplace, these pronouns are often used to emphasize that a rule applies to absolutely everyone, no matter who they are, without special treatment.

to exempt / to except

Setting Exceptions

Even when options are completely open, you will occasionally need to carve out clear limits. Notice that in some contexts, Thai speakers compress these free-choice phrases into a single unbroken word (e.g., อะไรก็ตาม).
