Discussing the Environment
When discussing environmental impacts and climate change, you will often use formal vocabulary.
| Industry releases a lot of gas. | อุตสาหกรรม ปล่อย ก๊าซ เยอะ ครับ |
| Carbon dioxide gas makes the world hot. | ก๊าซ คาร์บอนไดออกไซด์ ทำให้ โลก ร้อน ครับ |
Formal Cause and Effect
To connect a premise to a logical conclusion in formal Thai, use the paired conjunction ดังนั้น (therefore) and จึง (thus).
Unlike English, formal Thai pairs these two words across the result clause:
- ดังนั้น is placed at the very beginning of the result clause.
- จึง is placed immediately before the verb of the result clause.
The standard structure is: [Premise], ดังนั้น [Subject of result] จึง [Verb/Predicate of result].
Here is the pattern in action:
| The weather is hot; therefore, the ice melts. | อากาศ ร้อน ดังนั้น น้ำแข็ง จึง ละลาย ค่ะ |
| Humans destroy nature; therefore, animals go extinct. | มนุษย์ ทำลาย ธรรมชาติ ดังนั้น สัตว์ จึง สูญพันธุ์ ค่ะ |
| Summer is very dry; therefore, disasters are severe. | ฤดูร้อน แห้งแล้ง มาก ดังนั้น ภัยพิบัติ จึง รุนแรง ค่ะ |
If the premise is already established, you can start a new sentence directly with ดังนั้น to draw your conclusion.
| Therefore, industry must reduce carbon dioxide gas. | ดังนั้น อุตสาหกรรม จึง ต้อง ลด ก๊าซ คาร์บอนไดออกไซด์ ครับ |
Advocating for Change
When advocating for change, use จนกว่าจะ to express that an action will continue "until" a goal is met.
| We will campaign until we succeed. | เรา จะ รณรงค์ จนกว่าจะ สำเร็จ ค่ะ |
To express "not only... but also," place ไม่เพียงแต่ before the first action and แต่ยัง before the second, often ending the thought with ด้วย.
| We must not only campaign, but also take action. | เรา ไม่เพียงแต่ รณรงค์ แต่ยัง ต้อง ลงมือ ทำ ด้วย ครับ |
