Emphatic addition (ด้วยซ้ำ / ด้วยซ้ำไป)

Talent auditions are meant to showcase the best, but sometimes contestants are surprisingly unprepared. When you want to add surprise or extreme emphasis to your statements—similar to saying "even" or "actually" in English—Thai uses a special emphatic particle at the end of the clause.

Emphasizing the Unexpected

To emphasize an extreme or counter-expected addition to a statement, place ด้วยซ้ำ at the very end of your clause. This particle highlights that a situation goes beyond what is normally expected, often pointing out a lack of something basic.

You can also use the slightly longer variant ด้วยซ้ำไป. The meaning is identical, but it can feel slightly more emphatic or melodic. You will often hear it when discussing someone who repeatedly comes to compete (ประกวด) but fails to advance (เข้ารอบ).

Highlighting Basic Failures

These emphatic particles are exceptionally common in negative sentences, used to point out that even the bare minimum wasn't achieved—like an auditioning singer who cannot remember the lyrics (เนื้อเพลง).

They also work perfectly with affirmative sentences to pile on extreme, unexpected actions. For instance, a performance might not just be bad, but the contestant might play a musical instrument (เครื่องดนตรี) completely off-key (เพี้ยน).

Combining with Extreme Results

You can easily combine this emphatic addition with structures you already know, such as the resultative marker จน (so [much] that). If a contestant is extremely nervous (ประหม่า), you can cap off the resulting consequence with ด้วยซ้ำ to emphasize just how intense the situation has become.
