Collective actions (พากัน)

Doing Things Collectively with พากัน

When you want to describe a group of people or animals performing an action at the same time, Thai uses the auxiliary word พากัน. Placed immediately before an action verb, it indicates that the group is doing something "altogether" or "collectively."

altogether / collectively
พากัน

You will frequently see this paired with group nouns like a crowd (ฝูงชน) to describe collective movement.

Crowding Around and Gossiping

This grammar pattern is perfect for describing specific crowd behaviors. If a group of people is crowding around (มุง) an incident, พากัน highlights that they are doing it as a collective mass.

It also applies to group chatter, such as reporters gathering to secretly gossip or whisper (ซุบซิบ) about a celebrity.

Flocking and Hoarding

When a crowd moves with a specific purpose, such as flocking (แห่) to a sale or rushing to stock up (ตุน) on supplies, you place พากัน before the main action to emphasize the mass behavior.

Panic and Mass Evacuations

In extreme situations, crowds might panic (แตกตื่น). When this panic leads a group to collectively evacuate (อพยพ), stream (หลั่งไหล) into a location, or rush (กรู) chaotically, พากัน links the subjects to their mass action.
