Approximations (สัก)

Approximating Amounts and Time

When asking for a haircut or estimating time, you often want to give approximate amounts rather than exact figures. In Thai, place the modifier สัก right before a number, classifier, or time period to mean "about" or "around."

Softening Requests with สัก

สัก is also an excellent tool for making requests sound gentler and less demanding. When you want something done "just a little bit," pair สัก with นิด (a little).

สัก + นิด

Contrast: "About" vs. "Only"

Be careful not to confuse the softening "just" (สัก) with the limiting "just" or "only" (แค่).

only / just (indicating limitation)
แค่

While สัก makes a number flexible or a request softer, แค่ emphasizes that an action or quantity is strictly limited and no more than stated.
