Alternative questions (หรือเปล่า)

In Thai, you can ask direct yes/no questions using the alternative question particle หรือเปล่า. This particle roughly translates to "or not?" and is placed at the end of a statement. It is perfect for verifying information, checking facts, or getting to the bottom of a rumor.

Uncovering secrets

Because หรือเปล่า is used to clarify suspicions, it is frequently used in conversations about secrets, cheating, and gossip.

Double-checking mistakes

You can use this same structure to check if an action was done incorrectly. Simply place the word ผิด (wrong) after the verb or object, followed by หรือเปล่า.

Verifying certainty with ว่า

When you want to ask if someone is certain about a specific situation, you can use the conjunction ว่า (that) to connect two clauses. Notice how in this structure, หรือเปล่า directly follows แน่ใจ (to be sure), acting on the main verb before introducing the rest of the sentence.
