Absolute degree adverb (อย่างสิ้นเชิง)

The Absolute Degree Adverb

To express that an action happened to its absolute fullest extent, Thai uses the adverb อย่างสิ้นเชิง (completely / entirely).

completely / entirely (totally, absolutely)
อย่างสิ้นเชิง

This adverb is placed after the verb phrase or the object. It is highly specific and most commonly used to modify verbs of change, difference, or total destruction.

Emphasizing Change

When talking about deep transformations, such as a landscape or neighborhood altering its character, you will frequently see the directional particle ไป (away / off) attached to the verb เปลี่ยน (to change).

This particle emphasizes the departure from the original state. The adverb อย่างสิ้นเชิง directly follows this verb-particle combination.

Connecting to Results and Reactions

When a site is completely leveled or changed, you often need to describe the physical outcome or how people reacted to the dramatic event. You can introduce this resulting state using จน (until / to the point that).

Notice how อย่างสิ้นเชิง describes the absolute completion of the action before the sentence moves on to describe the consequence.
