Questions & Answers about Tyvärr ingrep de kanske för sent.
Why does the subject de come before the sentence adverb kanske here?
Because the sentence starts with the adverb Tyvärr, triggering inverted word order (verb before subject). In this inverted structure, a short, unstressed pronoun subject like de usually squeezes in right after the verb and before the sentence adverb (kanske).
How would the word order change if we replaced the pronoun de with a heavier noun subject like polisen (the police)?
Heavier noun subjects usually drop behind the sentence adverb. So, if we used polisen, the sentence would normally become Tyvärr ingrep kanske polisen för sent.
What kind of verb is ingrep and what is its infinitive form?
The infinitive is ingripa, meaning to intervene or step in. It is a strong verb that builds on gripa (to grab or catch), so it follows the same vowel change pattern: ingripa, ingriper, ingrep, har ingripit.
Could we use försenade instead of för sent to say they were too late?
No, försenad (and its plural försenade) specifically means delayed, like a train running behind schedule or a person arriving late to a meeting. För sent is used here because it simply means too late in time for their action to be effective.
