Questions & Answers about Så färgstarkt norrskenet är ikväll!
Why do we use Så here instead of a word for "how"?
In English, you usually make this kind of exclamation using "How" ("How colorful!"). But in Swedish exclamatory clauses, you use Så (literally "so") followed by the adjective or adverb. If you used Hur here, it would sound like you are asking a direct question.
Why doesn't the verb är come right after färgstarkt?
Exclamatory clauses like this use declarative word order for the rest of the sentence, which means the subject (norrskenet) comes before the verb (är). If you inverted them to say ... färgstarkt är norrskenet, it would sound like you were asking a question.
Why is färgstarkt spelled with a -t at the end?
The adjective must agree with the subject it describes. Because norrsken is an ett word (ett sken means a glow or shine), the adjective färgstark takes the neuter -t ending to become färgstarkt.
In English, "northern lights" is plural. Why is norrskenet singular?
In Swedish, the aurora borealis is treated as a single glowing phenomenon rather than multiple lights. It is built from norr (north) and ett sken (a light or glow). Since it is singular, it is paired with the singular verb är.
