Questions & Answers about Skurken har en övernaturlig kraft som förstör staden.
This lesson is about structures like det gamla Stockholm. Why don't we use a free definite article for övernaturlig kraft?
The rule you are currently learning applies to definite descriptions of proper nouns (names). In this sentence, kraft (power) is a regular noun, not a name. Furthermore, the phrase is indefinite here ("a supernatural power"), so it simply takes the standard indefinite article en and the base adjective form övernaturlig.
Why doesn't the adjective övernaturlig have an -a or -t ending here?
Because it is modifying a singular, indefinite en-word (en kraft). If the villain had a supernatural weapon instead (an ett-word like ett vapen), the adjective would take a -t and become ett övernaturligt vapen. If it were plural or definite, it would take an -a (like den övernaturliga kraften).
Could I use vilken instead of som to translate "that" in this sentence?
You could technically say en övernaturlig kraft vilken förstör staden, but it sounds extremely formal and stiff. In Swedish, som is overwhelmingly preferred for "that", "which", or "who" when linking a relative clause like this, regardless of whether the noun is an en-word or ett-word.
Is only used for fictional "villains"?
