Questions & Answers about Den uppsatta flätan var väldigt vacker.
Why is the particle 'upp' attached to the front of the word in uppsatta?
This is the rule for phrasal verbs when they become adjectives (past participles). While the verb is separated as an action (att sätta upp = to put up), the adjective form must combine them into a single word with the particle as a prefix. You cannot say den satta upp flätan.
Why does uppsatta end with an -a?
Because it is acting as an adjective describing a definite noun phrase (den ... flätan). Just like a regular adjective, a past participle takes the -a ending when used in the definite form.
Does the double definite rule apply to participles too?
Yes! Because uppsatta is functioning as an adjective here, Swedish requires the standard double definite structure: the independent article Den before the adjective, and the definite suffix -n on the noun flätan.
What other things can be described as uppsatt besides hair?
The phrasal verb sätta upp means to put up or set up. In addition to hair, you will frequently see it used for things like an uppsatt affisch (a put-up poster), an uppsatt skylt (a posted sign), or ett uppsatt mål (a set goal).
