Questions & Answers about Handlingen är oförutsägbar, och det är slutet också.
Why do we need the word det in the second clause?
This is the "pro-predicative" det. In Swedish, when you want to avoid repeating an adjective or description that was just used (in this case, oförutsägbar), you use det as a placeholder. While English simply leaves the space blank ("the ending is too"), Swedish requires det to stand in for the missing information.
Why is the word order det är slutet också instead of slutet är det också?
Both are grammatically correct, but putting det first is very common because it closely connects to the adjective in the previous clause. Because det takes the first position in the new clause, the verb är must come exactly second due to the V2 rule, which pushes the subject slutet to the third position.
If the second subject were plural, like karaktärerna (the characters), would det change to de?
No, it remains det. When det is used as a pro-predicative stand-in for an adjective or a state of being, it is entirely fixed. It doesn't matter if the subject it applies to is an en word, an ett word, or plural; you will always use det.
Handlingen translates to "the plot" here, but doesn't it usually mean "the action"?
Yes, en handling generally means "an action" or "an act" (from the verb att handla). However, when discussing books, movies, or plays, handlingen is the standard term for "the plot" or "the storyline". Another word you might encounter for plot is intrigen.
